The KonMari Checklist: Rules of Tidying

The KonMari Method™ is a decluttering and organizing technique developed by Marie Kondo, a Japanese organizing consultant.

This method involves decluttering by category, keeping only those items that “spark joy”, and using designated storage spaces for everything.

There are 6 essential rules that make up the KonMari Checklist, and they go beyond just decluttering. As a certified KonMari Consultant these rules have become my bread and butter, and as I always say, tidying a lifestyle and it involves commitment and dedication…and hard work, in most cases!

One of the key principles of the KonMari Method™ is to declutter by category, rather than by location. This means that instead of decluttering a room or a closet, you should declutter all items of a particular category at once. For example, you could start by decluttering all your clothes, then move on to books, papers, and so on. This approach helps you to see the full extent of the clutter you have and makes it easier to decide which items to keep and which to discard.

Another important aspect of the KonMari Method™ is the idea of keeping only items that “spark joy”. This means that you should only keep items that make you happy or that you truly need. To determine whether an item sparks joy, you need to hold it in your hands and see how it makes you feel. If it brings you happiness, keep it. If it doesn’t, thank it for its service and let it go.

To implement the KonMari Method™, it’s essential to have designated storage spaces for everything. This means that each item should have a specific place where it belongs, and you should always put it back in that place after use. By having a designated space for each item, you can easily find what you need when you need it, and you can avoid clutter from piling up.

If you’re interested in learning more about the KonMari Method™ and how it can help you achieve your organisational goals, I encourage you to read more about our philosophy in the dedicated page here on our website.
