As the temperatures drop and winter encroaches, our homes crave a certain coziness that feels inviting and warm.
The KonMari Methodâ„¢ is an excellent way to create a space that feels tidy and joy-sparking all year round, but there are a few extra steps you can take to make your home feel extra cozy during the coldest months.
We have come up with a list of our seven essential tips to turn your home into an inviting and warm space:
First impressions matters: the entrance
The entryway is the first space you and your guests see when you arrive home, so it’s here that you should dedicate some time to make a few small changes. Add a chair or a bench, if you have space, to allow people to sit down when taking the shoes off, and have plenty of storage space, hooks or baskets for guests to leave coats, hats, scarves or umbrellas.
Leave your shoes behind
It’s a common practice in Japan to remove shoes at the entrance and have “house shoes” – or slippers if you like – to put on instead and use around the house. Embrace this Japanese tradition and slip into your comfy loafers as soon as you get in. This will prevent any mud, snow, or rain from being tracked into your home, but more importantly, it will keep toes warm and toasty. Make sure to have extra pairs for guests so they will instantly feel cosy and at home.
Light up some Candles
The power of scent can transform any room instantly. Swap out your usual spring and summer florals for warming scents like Japanese cypress or rosewood. Light a candle during your morning routine or before guests arrive to add ambient warmth to your home.
There’s no such thing as too many throw blankets
Place extra blankets in the living room or other shared spaces so everyone can warm up as much as they like. Add a storage basket to a corner where blankets can be folded and stored when not in use.
Switch to warm lamps
As the days grow shorter, ensure that all rooms have sufficient lighting. Avoid overhead lights and opt for lamps, pendant lights, and warm light bulbs instead. For a cozy atmosphere, add plenty of candlelight with pillars on tables or votives placed strategically around the room.
Add small luxuries to the guest room
If you’re hosting guests this winter, add a few extra blankets to their room to keep them warm and comfortable. If possible, consider adding an electric kettle and a selection of tea. Nothing feels more welcoming than a warm cup of tea before bed.
Don’t forget the bathroom
Bathrooms are not to be forgotten when it comes to home decoration. Particular in winter, it’s important to add warmth to a space that sometimes can feel a bit…cold. Add a candle to the countertop and swap your usual towels with plush, warm alternatives. Keep seasonal products such as a rich hand lotion and tissues nearby to combat chapped hands and sniffles.
A cozy home is all about how you spend your time, and who you spend it with. By following these simple and effective techniques, you’ll be able to create a warm, inviting atmosphere that will make your guests feel right at home.
